Bianca Andreescu and Denis Shapovalov were unable to extend their runs at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, according to Tennis Canada. The pair of Ontarians exited the ATP Masters 1000 event, which serves as the final major preparation tournament before Roland-Garros.
What happened to the Canadian contingent
Andreescu and Shapovalov both lost their matches at the Rome Masters. Andreescu had opened the tournament with a straight-sets victory over Sofia Kenin, 6-4, 7-5, but could not maintain that form in subsequent rounds. Shapovalov faced a difficult first-round draw against Mariano Navone and was unable to advance.
Did Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov meet in Rome
Félix Auger-Aliassime, seeded No. 4, advanced in the draw, but Shapovalov's early exit meant the two Canadians did not face each other. According to Tennis Canada, a second-round clash between the Richmond Hill native and Auger-Aliassime had been projected if both players won their opening matches. The pair had not met in an ATP Tour match for four and a half years, with their head-to-head record tied at 3-3.
What's next for Canadian players
The Rome Masters was the final ATP Masters 1000 event before the French Open, making it a crucial tuneup for players preparing for the clay-court Grand Slam. The National Bank Open presented by Rogers will return to Canadian soil in August, with the WTA heading to Toronto and the ATP hosting in Montreal from August 1 to 13.
