Bianca Andreescu has qualified for the Wimbledon main draw, defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-3, 7-6(4) in the third round of qualifying on Thursday at Roehampton. The 26-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario, came from down a break twice in the second set to secure her spot at the grass-court Grand Slam, marking her return to a major main draw for the first time in nearly two years.
How did Andreescu reach the main draw?
Andreescu won three consecutive qualifying matches to earn her Wimbledon berth. She opened with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Polona Hercog on Tuesday, then defeated Switzerland's Jil Teichmann 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday before clinching the final round against Sasnovich on Thursday. Her comeback in the second set of the Sasnovich match proved decisive, as she recovered from a break down twice to advance.
What is her Wimbledon history?
Andreescu has made five previous trips to the Wimbledon main draw, reaching the third round in both 2023 and 2024. The former world No. 4 won the U.S. Open in 2019 and has not competed in a Grand Slam main draw since the 2024 U.S. Open. She missed last year's Wimbledon main draw after losing in the second round of qualifying to fellow Canadian Carson Branstine.
What happened to other Canadian qualifiers?
Katherine Sebov of Toronto fell in the final round of qualifying, losing 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) to Russia's Iryna Shymanovich. Sebov had been a last-minute addition to the qualifying draw and had fought back from 5-3 down in the deciding set during her second-round win over Germany's Noma Noha Akugue. Andreescu is now the lone Canadian to advance out of qualifying.
The Wimbledon main draw begins Monday.
