Mirra Andreeva secured a spot in the Madrid Open final on Thursday, one day after celebrating her 19th birthday. The Russian defeated No. 30 seed Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 7-6(8) to advance to her first WTA 1000 championship match, according to Tennis Majors.
Andreeva controlled the opening set before the second set tightened considerably, forcing a deciding tiebreak. The match featured a dispute over an electronic line call during the contest, though Andreeva ultimately prevailed in the tiebreak to secure her berth in the final.
The Madrid Open is one of the WTA's premier events, and reaching the final represents a significant milestone for the teenager early in her career. Andreeva will face the winner of the other semifinal when the championship match takes place in the Spanish capital.
