Félix Auger-Aliassime's campaign at the Terra Wortmann Open ended in the quarterfinals Friday when the Canadian second seed lost to Frances Tiafoe 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12) in Halle. Auger-Aliassime saved four match points in a marathon third-set tiebreaker before Tiafoe converted his fifth attempt to reach the semifinals.
How the match unfolded
The contest lasted two hours and 32 minutes, with Tiafoe taking the opening set before Auger-Aliassime levelled the match in the second. The decisive third set went to a tiebreaker that extended to 12 points, where Tiafoe finally prevailed.
Auger-Aliassime's performance
The 25-year-old from Montreal struck 25 aces during the match and created three match points of his own. According to CFJC Today Kamloops, Auger-Aliassime, ranked No. 4 in the world, saved three of five breakpoint chances against him.
Tiafoe's path forward
Tiafoe, ranked No. 26 globally, hit five aces and successfully defended seven of nine breakpoint opportunities to secure his spot in the semifinals.
