Félix Auger-Aliassime's run at the ATP Terra Wortmann Open in Halle ended Friday when he fell to Frances Tiafoe 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12) in the quarterfinals. The Montreal native, seeded second at the German grass-court tournament, had three match points in the deciding set but could not convert, as Tiafoe saved five match points to reach the semifinals.
How the match unfolded
Auger-Aliassime won the opening set decisively, 6-3, relying on his powerful serve and short points typical of grass courts. Tiafoe responded by finding a better rhythm in rallies during the second set, raising his aggression and levelling the match at 6-3 to force a decider.
The third set became a back-and-forth battle. Tiafoe trailed 0-2 early but clawed back into contention. At 5-6, 30-30, Auger-Aliassime was two points away from victory, but Tiafoe found his first serve and forced a tiebreaker. The tiebreak extended to 14-12, with Auger-Aliassime saving four match points before Tiafoe converted his fifth attempt after two hours and 32 minutes of play.
Auger-Aliassime's serve dominance was not enough
The 25-year-old Canadian struck 25 aces during the match, according to northeastNOW, but his service advantage could not overcome Tiafoe's resilience. Auger-Aliassime, ranked No. 4 in the world, fended off three of five break points he faced. Tiafoe, ranked No. 26, saved seven of nine break-point chances and hit five aces of his own.
The victory marked Tiafoe's first career win over Auger-Aliassime in their head-to-head meetings. Tiafoe advanced to face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
