Leylah Fernandez won the WTA 500 title in Singapore last week, marking the strongest result of her 2026 season. The Canadian defeated Mirra Andreeva, Maja Chwalinska, and Talia Gibson en route to her sixth career title, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Why the warning about complacency?
Fernandez's season has been marked by inconsistency despite the Singapore breakthrough. According to Yahoo! Sports, the 24-year-old carries a negative win-loss record for 2026 and exited three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the first round, reaching only the third round at the US Open. Her best performances this year came during the clay-court swing in Madrid and Stuttgart, in addition to the Singapore title.
Eight-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors addressed Fernandez's victory on his podcast, cautioning her not to "sit back on her laurels" as the season winds down. Connors highlighted the gap between her breakthrough week in Singapore and the broader pattern of early exits that has defined much of her year.
The Canadian Open in August saw Fernandez reach the fourth round, her deepest run at a Canadian tournament this season. The Singapore title offers momentum heading into the final stretch of the WTA calendar.
