No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic fell to Mariano Navone in five sets on Sunday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, marking a stunning first-round exit for the four-time US Open champion. Navone won 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a match that produced one of the tournament's earliest major surprises.
Why the upset matters
Djokovic's early departure reshapes the men's draw and removes one of the traditional favourites from contention. The loss came despite Djokovic holding a set lead after the opening tiebreak, suggesting Navone's form and consistency overwhelmed the seeded player over the course of the match.
