Leylah Fernandez of Laval advanced to the second round of the US Open after defeating China's Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-2 in opening-round women's singles play on Sunday. The 31st-seeded Fernandez converted three of seven break-point chances and saved all seven of Zhang's break-point opportunities, according to TSN.

Fernandez served cleanly throughout, recording four aces against three double faults. Zhang managed no aces and committed one double fault, giving the Canadian the advantage in serve quality and consistency.
Shapovalov also moves forward
Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill defeated Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 later on Sunday in men's singles. Shapovalov fired 19 aces but also committed 11 double faults, breaking serve six times on 14 chances, per TSN.
Both Canadians now face second-round opponents at the Grand Slam.
