Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec won the Singapore Tennis Open on Sunday, defeating Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 for her first WTA title of 2026. The sixth seed claimed her first tournament victory of the season in dominant fashion.
How Fernandez reached the final
Fernandez advanced to the final by defeating fifth seed Maja Chwalinska of Poland in the semifinal on Saturday. The Canadian reached her first semifinal since Hong Kong in 2025, according to the WTA, after an upset of top seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The quarterfinal upset over Andreeva
Fernandez defeated No. 1 seed Mirra Andreeva 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals, improving her head-to-head record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in 2026 against the world No. 5, according to the WTA. The Canadian saved two break points in the third game of the first set, then broke Andreeva to establish a 1-0 lead on her way to the opening set. Fernandez held off a late charge by Andreeva from 5-2 down in the second set to secure the victory.
