Leylah Fernandez defeated No. 5 Mirra Andreeva 6-2, 7-5 on Friday to advance to the Singapore Tennis Open semifinals, claiming her first semifinal appearance of the season. The Laval native broke Andreeva six times across the match, converting the decisive break in the 12th game of the second set to seal victory in one hour 32 minutes.
How Fernandez controlled the match
Fernandez saved two break points in the opening set and broke Andreeva immediately to take a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Fernandez built a 5-2 advantage before Andreeva attempted a comeback, but Fernandez's sixth break of the match ended any threat. According to La Presse, Fernandez won 53 per cent of points when Andreeva was serving, while Fernandez herself surrendered only three breaks despite facing pressure in the second set.
What's next for Fernandez
Fernandez will face Poland's fifth-seeded Maja Chwalinska on Saturday in the semifinal. The two players have never met before. Chwalinska advanced to the semifinals by defeating defending champion Elise Mertens and was runner-up at the French Open earlier this year. Fernandez improved her career record against Andreeva to 3-2, with all three victories coming on hardcourt, including a win at the National Bank Open in Toronto earlier in 2026.
