Jakub Mensik defeated Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3) in the French Open quarterfinals on Tuesday to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal. The 20-year-old Czech player's commanding display under the Court Philippe-Chatrier roof ended the Brazilian teenager's fairy-tale run through Paris, though Fonseca departed with his head held high after exceeding his own expectations.
Why Fonseca's run was remarkable
Fonseca arrived at Roland Garros carrying concerns about a recent injury but produced one of the tournament's most electrifying performances, eliminating Novak Djokovic in the third round before dispatching two-time finalist Casper Ruud 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-2 in the fourth round. According to The Star, the 19-year-old Brazilian is the first of his countrymen to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Gustavo Kuerten in 2004, also at Roland Garros, and the youngest Brazilian ever to reach the last eight of any major in the Open Era.
What Fonseca said about the loss
Despite falling in straight sets, Fonseca told reporters the tournament had given him greater conviction and confidence for the road ahead. According to India Today, he stated: "I have never seen my limit yet, but I already know that I can be comfortable with my physique. I think it's more comfortable with my game, the way that I'm playing, that my mentality is on the right path." Fonseca added that the fortnight had shown him how his body could cope with the physical demands of Grand Slam tennis and reinforced his belief that he was moving in the right direction.
Mensik's path to the semifinal
Mensik's journey to the last four was defined by resilience and depth. According to Bettors Insider, the 20-year-old Czech player, seeded 26th, survived a grueling four-hour, 41-minute battle against Mariano Navone in the second round that required a fifth-set tiebreak. He then became the first man since Lorenzo Giustino at Roland Garros 2020 to win a Grand Slam match after losing an opening set 6-0, defeating eighth-seeded Alex de Minaur 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round. Mensik then outlasted 11th-seeded Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the fourth round to set up his quarterfinal with Fonseca. With the victory over Rublev, Mensik became just the second Czech player to reach a men's singles Grand Slam quarterfinal before age 21, joining tennis legend Ivan Lendl.
Mensik now advances to face tournament favourite Alexander Zverev in the semifinal.
