How the match unfolded
Sonego broke serve early in the fifth set to establish a 2-0 lead, then held the advantage despite Diallo recovering one break to make it 3-2. The Italian won the next two service games to secure the victory. Over the first four sets, Diallo had been broken just once, keeping the match competitive until the final set.
What's next for Canadian tennis at Wimbledon
Félix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal remains Canada's only singles player in the draw. The third seed is scheduled to face American Michael Zheng in third-round action Friday. In women's doubles, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec, and Kazakhstan's Yulia Putinseva were eliminated in first-round play, falling 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to third seeds Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic.
