Leylah Fernandez of Quebec captured the Singapore WTA 500 tournament on Sunday, defeating Australia's Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 for her sixth career WTA title. Fernandez, ranked No. 31, dominated the second set after a competitive opening frame in which both players exchanged early breaks.
How Fernandez controlled the match
Fernandez converted six of 12 break-point opportunities and won 54 per cent of points on return of serve. After Gibson took a 5-4 lead in the first set, Fernandez won the next nine consecutive games to close out the match. She also performed strongly on her own serve, winning 67 per cent of rallies when her first serve was in play.
Fernandez's success in Asia
Three of Fernandez's six career titles have been won in Asia, including the Japan Open last October. The Singapore victory marks her first final appearance of the season, extending her track record in the region where she has found consistent success.
