Victoria Mboko and Félix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the second round at Roland Garros on Tuesday, while Denis Shapovalov was eliminated in the first round by Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria. The mixed results leave Canada with two seeded players still alive in the men's and women's draws at the clay-court Grand Slam.
Mboko defeats Bartunkova in straight sets
Mboko defeated Czechia's Nikola Bartunkova 6-1, 6-2 in 69 minutes to reach the second round. The 19-year-old from Burlington, Ontario, who is seeded ninth in the women's draw, converted six break points in ten chances and faced only two break points herself, defending one. Mboko is making her second appearance at the French Open after advancing to the third round in her debut last year.
Mboko will next face Katerina Siniakova, a 30-year-old Czech veteran ranked No. 36 in singles who is also part of the top-ranked doubles team at Roland Garros with American Taylor Townsend. Mboko came into the tournament off a run to the final of the Strasbourg International the previous week.
Auger-Aliassime survives Altmaier in five sets
Auger-Aliassime, seeded fourth in the men's draw, advanced past Germany's Daniel Altmaier in a five-set match. The 25-year-old from Montreal hit nine aces but faced 13 break points, converting six of his own. A crucial break in the fifth set cut Altmaier's lead to 4-3, and Auger-Aliassime won the final two points of the tiebreaker on return to seal the victory.
Auger-Aliassime will face Argentina's Roman Andres Burruchaga in the second round.
Shapovalov exits in first round
Shapovalov lost 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to Faria, a Portuguese qualifier. Faria broke to lead 6-5 in the second set, then held serve to put Shapovalov on the brink of elimination. In the third set, Faria broke early and held on despite Shapovalov winning one game on return. The 27-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ontario, hit ten aces but committed eight double faults and 48 unforced errors. Shapovalov entered the tournament ranked 39th in the world and dropped his season record to 8-11.
