Denis Shapovalov advanced at the ATP Chengdu Open with a straight-set victory over Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic. The Canadian, seeded seventh, won 6-2, 6-3 on the centre court.
Shapovalov's path through Chengdu
Shapovalov's two-set dismissal of Kopriva was decisive and left little room for his opponent to threaten. The match followed the expected trajectory for a seeded player facing an unseeded challenger, with the Canadian controlling both sets from the outset.
Tournament action elsewhere
Other seeded players also made progress at the event. Adrian Mannarino of France defeated No. 3 seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-4, 6-4, while Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia beat No. 4 seed Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands 6-4, 7-5. In doubles, John Peers and Michael Venus claimed a tight opening set against David Stevenson and Marcus Willis, 7-6(10), before losing the second 5-7 and winning the third 12-10.
