Denis Shapovalov's run at the Chengdu ATP 250 ended in the semifinals on Monday when seventh-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland rallied to win 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-3 after two hours and 27 minutes on the hard court. The Ontario native played a tight first set, leading 5-2 in the tiebreak before Hurkacz fought back to force a decider at 8-8, only for Shapovalov to take the final two points. Hurkacz broke serve twice in the second set to level the match and dominated the third to advance to the final. According to La Presse, Shapovalov's record against Hurkacz now stands at 1-6, with the Pole winning their last four meetings.
Shapovalov remains without a title this season and continues searching for his fifth ATP crown. The loss marks another setback in what has been a difficult campaign for the Canadian.
Fernandez reaches Singapore final after comeback win
Leylah Annie Fernandez of Quebec advanced to her first final of the season on Saturday by defeating Poland's Maja Chwalinska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the Singapore WTA event. After losing her serve four times in the opening set, Fernandez broke back four times across the next two sets to secure the victory in two hours and 10 minutes. She converted her first match point to clinch the semifinal.
Fernandez will face Australia's Talia Gibson in the championship match. Gibson reached the final when Russia's Tatiana Prozorova withdrew before their scheduled semifinal. The two players have never met on the WTA tour. Fernandez's last final appearance came at the Japan Open in October, where she won her fifth career title.
