Denis Shapovalov lost to Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Chengdu tournament on Monday, according to La Presse. The seventh-seeded Canadian competed for two hours and 27 minutes on the hard court but could not overcome the fifth-seeded Pole, who has now won four consecutive matches against Shapovalov. The loss leaves Shapovalov's career record against Hurkacz at 1-6.
First set went to a tiebreak
The opening set proved tight, with neither player able to break serve until the tiebreak. Shapovalov built a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak but Hurkacz fought back to level at 6-6, then 7-7 and 8-8 before Shapovalov took the next two points to win the set after one hour of play.
Hurkacz took control in sets two and three
Hurkacz broke serve in the third game of the second set and held his advantage, then broke again in the ninth game to level the match. The third set followed a similar pattern, with Hurkacz's superior serving and return game proving decisive as Shapovalov's title drought continued—he remains without a win this season and has five ATP titles in his career.
Fernandez advances in Singapore
Leylah Annie Fernandez reached her first final of the season by defeating Polish player Maja Chwalinska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the Singapore tournament on Saturday, according to La Presse. The 31st-ranked Québécoise recovered from losing all four of her service games in the opening set by breaking Chwalinska four times across the next two sets. The match lasted two hours and 10 minutes.
Fernandez faces Gibson in final
Fernandez will face Australian Talia Gibson (No. 63) in the final. Gibson advanced when Russian player Tatiana Prozorova withdrew before their semi-final. Fernandez and Gibson have never met on the WTA tour. Fernandez's last final appearance came at the Japan Open in October, where she won her fifth career title.
