Denis Shapovalov defeated British wildcard Jack Pinnington Jones 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3) in first-round action Monday at the HSBC Championships, ending a five-match losing streak that stretched back to April. The Canadian recovered from a precarious position in the third set to advance at Queen's Club in London.
How Shapovalov came back from the brink
Pinnington Jones, ranked 106 places below Shapovalov at No. 147, broke serve to reach 6-5 in the deciding set and had two break points while serving for the match at 30-0. Shapovalov responded by winning the next game against serve to force a tiebreak, then dominated the extra session 7-3, including two points on return. The match lasted one hour 54 minutes.
What the victory means for Shapovalov
The win halts a difficult stretch that began after Shapovalov reached the quarterfinals of the clay-court BMW Open in April. Shapovalov served eight aces and both players converted three breaks apiece, with two of those conversions occurring in the third set. He will face the winner of a match between top seed Alex de Minaur of Australia and Montreal's Gabriel Diallo in the second round.
