Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario, retired from his Wimbledon first-round match Monday after injuring his left shoulder during a collision with a courtside barrier. Shapovalov trailed Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 7-6(7) when he withdrew from Court 6.
What happened to Shapovalov?
Shapovalov injured his shoulder while chasing a forehand shot late in the second-set tiebreak, crashing into the protective barrier at high speed. According to CBC, he received medical treatment during a timeout and played one more point before losing the tiebreak 9-7 and deciding he could not continue. The incident marked Carreno Busta's first-ever victory at the All England Club after seven previous defeats at Wimbledon.
How does this fit Shapovalov's season?
The retirement extends a difficult stretch for the 27-year-old, who is now 9-14 on the year and has dropped to No. 41 in the world rankings. According to Sportsnet, this marks the second Grand Slam in a row in which Shapovalov exited in the first round, following his loss at the Australian Open. He has won just one match since mid-April and arrived at Wimbledon having played only three grass-court matches beforehand.
Despite the early exit, Shapovalov finished with 14 aces but landed only 53 per cent of his first serves before the injury ended his afternoon. His performance contrasted sharply with his 2021 run at the same venue, when he reached the semi-finals after defeating Andy Murray and seeded opponents Roberto Bautista Agut and Karen Khachanov before losing to Novak Djokovic in the final four.
Three other Canadians were scheduled for first-round singles action on Monday: Félix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal (the men's third seed), Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec (the women's 22nd seed), and Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario (a qualifier).
