Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1, defeated French wildcard Clément Tabur in the first round of the French Open and will face Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the second round. Sinner broke Tabur's serve early and maintained clinical control throughout the opening set, consolidating his advantage with precise baseline play.
How did Cerúndolo reach the second round?
Cerúndolo, ranked No. 56 on the ATP Tour, defeated British player Jacob Fearnley in straight sets on May 26 to advance. The 24-year-old left-hander from Buenos Aires, nicknamed "El Mago" (The Magician), turned professional in 2018 and has built a credible résumé on the tour. His older brother, Francisco, is also an active ATP player, currently ranked No. 26.
What is at stake for Sinner?
A French Open title would make Sinner just the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the career Grand Slam. Sinner enters the tournament as one of the clear favourites and is seeking redemption after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in last year's final, when three match points slipped away in a five-set defeat. Félix Auger-Aliassime, the fourth seed, is also competing at Roland Garros, having fought back from a first-set loss to defeat German clay-court specialist Daniel Altmaier in the first round.
