Canadian Victoria Mboko has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a knee injury, according to a statement she shared. The 19-year-old is one of nearly a dozen players who have pulled out of the main draw of the grass-court Grand Slam, which begins in just over a week.
Why did Victoria Mboko withdraw?
Mboko sustained an injury to her knee during a match at the Queen's Club tournament last week. In a statement reported by Yahoo News, she confirmed the injury means she will miss the remainder of the grass-court season. Mboko called the withdrawal disappointing, as Wimbledon was a tournament she was particularly looking forward to playing. She is now receiving medical care with her team focused on a return to the court as soon as possible.
Who else has withdrawn from Wimbledon?
A significant number of other players have also pulled out from the tournament. The most prominent absentee is two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is still recovering from a wrist injury that has sidelined him since April, according to UBITENNIS. Other withdrawals from the men's side include Sebastian Korda, Arthur Cazaux, and Tomas Machac.
On the women's side, Hailey Baptiste, Sonay Kartal, and Veronika Kudermetova have also withdrawn. According to official entry lists cited by UBITENNIS, 11 players had withdrawn from the singles main draws as of this week, comprising seven men and four women.
The tournament is scheduled to begin in late June, with players who have withdrawn being replaced by the next eligible players on the entry list.
