Alexander Zverev, seeded second at the Mutua Madrid Open, defeated Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-4 in the quarter-final on Thursday evening to reach the semi-finals. The victory marked a reversal of their meeting in Munich, where Cobolli had beaten Zverev 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-final just 12 days prior.
The rematch bore no resemblance to the German's earlier defeat. Tennis Majors reported that Zverev's dominance was complete, with the Italian unable to replicate the form that had carried him through the Munich tournament and a quarter-final win over Daniil Medvedev in Madrid.
Zverev had reached the quarter-final after a three-set victory over Czech qualifier Jakub Mensik, the No. 23 seed, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 on Tuesday, ending a three-year streak of fourth-round exits at the Spanish capital event.
